APSU men’s basketball team has had a storied past in the last 10 seasons
Over the span of a decade, the Govs have participated in three division one tournaments, won the OVC tournament for the fifth time in school history and were led by the winningest coach in the history of the conference. Listed below are the 2010-2019 APSU All-Decade team recipients
Guard: Tyshwan Edmondson
(2010-11) – 17.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2 APG
In Edmondson’s first season with the Governors, the junior spearheaded the offense for APSU: boasting a 20-14 record and scoring double figures in 27 of the 33 games played. The Midland College (TX) transfer additionally earned a first team-OVC selection, sharing a spot on the awarded roster with former NBA center Kenneth Faried. Edmondson graduated in the spring of 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in business management, and last played for the Brampton A’s in the National Basketball League of Canada. He was named NBL’s newcomer of the year during the 2014-15 season.
Guard: Travis Betran (2012-13) –
17.2 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 2.7 APG
After transferring from Kilgore College (TX), Travis Betran was named APSU MVP during the 2012-13 campaign and received a spot on the OVC All-Newcomer team. As a junior, Betran shot a blazing 41% from the three-point line, on over 200 attempts during the season. The Harlem native would later graduate with a degree in health and human performance and has most recently signed a contract to play for the Tri-State Admirals of The Basketball League.
Forward: Averyl Ugba (2017-18) –
15.7 PPG, 8 RPG, 1 APG
A transfer from Grambling State (LA), Ugba dominated the Ohio Valley in his lone season as a Governor, pouring in a career high of 35 points in a mid-January game at Jacksonville State and placing inside the top five in the conference for rebounds and field goal percentage (54.6). Ugba is currently averaging nine points and 6.5 rebounds for Khimik in the Ukranian Superleague.
Forward: Terry Taylor (2019-20) –
23.3 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 0.9 APG
Although the season has not come to full completion, Taylor’s dominance over the current year has been incomparable: the junior currently stands as the nation’s fourth leading scorer and is averaging a career high 35.6 minutes per game. The preseason OVC Player of the Year has led the Governors to a tie for first in the Valley, three spots above their preseason projection.
Center: Chris Horton (2015-16) –
18.8 PPG, 12 RPG, 1.5 APG
As the NCAA’s leading offensive rebounder, and a top-five rebounder overall during his senior season, Horton led APSU to a Cinderella run through the OVC championship game. Despite the team’s subpar 14-17 record going into the tournament, the Governors upset four of the tournament’s top five teams, including #1 ranked Belmont in the final round. Horton graduated with a degree in corporate communication and recently earned all-star honors in the Ligue Nationale de Basket (France), averaging 17.6 points and 8.8 rebounds with Cholet Basket.
Coach: Dave Loos (1990-2017)
The proclaimed ‘Dean of the OVC’ is the only coach in conference History with over 500 career victories and the only coach in APSU History to lead Governors’ basketball to OVC and NCAA tournament berths. The legendary coach’s 27 years with APSU produced a 420-410 win-loss ratio all time, alongside four conference titles and five coach of the year awards. He also served as the athletic director for APSU from 1997-2013. Loos announced retirement from APSU at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season but is now acting as an assistant to the Clarksville Academy basketball team, coaching Christian Brothers University commit (and grandson) Daniel Loos.
