If you would have asked almost anybody on APSU’s campus, they would have thought the women’s team would have been in this spot.
With players like Tiasha Gray and Beth Rates, the Lady Govs made it into the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament as a No. 5 seed.
Despite being a shoo-in for the tournament, the Lady Govs fell to Eastern Kentucky 82-68 after EKU went on a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter.
“We all thought the girls had the better chance,” said Carolyn Yarbrough, a longtime APSU fan. “We were devastated. We had tears, but then the boys helped us get over it.”
However, this did not stop the Lady Govs from traveling to Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament to show their support for the APSU Men’s Basketball team.
“I wish it was us, but I’m happy for them,” Gray said. “I’ve been trying to support them and not see the bad of us not being there.”
After Gray’s 26-point performance against EKU, she became the second player in APSU Women’s Basketball history to score at least 2,000 points. Gray finished with 2,011 and follows Brooke Armistead, who scored 2,508.
Gray also finished second in APSU history with assists ending at 518, following Kelly Chavez with 537, according to APSU sports information.
“I just hope it’s a good game,” Rates said. “Everyone for Kansas thinks they’re going to blow us out. It’s already fun that we’re here. It would be more fun if it’s a close game, and it would be even more fun if we win,”
