Austin Peay State University athletics had a full week of competition from March 15-22, with teams competing in conference and non conference play. Here is a recap of how the Governors performed.
Baseball
Austin Peay State University’s baseball team had a busy week, playing five games. They began a three-game series at Bellarmine on Friday, March 13, and ended the series with a win on Sunday, March 15, with a score of 12-3.
On Wednesday, March 17, they traveled to Ole Miss and, despite outhitting the Rebels, fell 9-5.
They also hosted Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Lipscomb in Week 2 of ASUN play in a three-game weekend series. On Friday, they fell to Lipscomb following a three-run eighth inning, with the game ending 11-8 in the series opener. On Saturday, March 21, they recorded five extra-base hits in a 12-8 win over Lipscomb, forcing a Sunday, March 22, matchup. On Sunday, they fell to Lipscomb 19-5 in the series finale.
Softball
APSU’s softball team played five games this week. They dropped the rubber match to Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Kentucky, on Sunday, March 15, with a score of 3-2.
On Wednesday, March 18, they scored in each of the first five innings, resulting in a 9-6 win against Tennessee Tech.
Coming off their midweek victory in Cookeville, the team returned home for its first Atlantic Sun Conference series of the season against North Alabama on March 21-22. In the first game of the series, Brie Howard hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and pitcher Alanah Jones surrendered just one hit in an 8-0 win.
They dropped a 5-0 decision in Game 2 of the doubleheader. On Sunday, March 22, the Govs trailed 4-0 midway through five innings of play. Home runs by Ashlyn Dulaney and Brie Howard in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings tied the game; however, the team dropped a 5-4 Atlantic Sun Conference decision to North Alabama in the series finale.
Women’s Lacrosse
Austin Peay State University’s women’s lacrosse team played three games this week, finishing with three losses. They fell to Iona, 12-6, Delaware, 19-3, and Liberty, 24-7.
Their game against Liberty on Saturday, March 21, was their final home game of the season. They will head into next week with a few more games remaining as their season nears its end.
Beach Volleyball
APSU’s beach volleyball team competed in its fifth tournament of the season at UAB’s March to May tournament, Friday-Saturday, March 20-21, in Birmingham, Alabama.
The team dropped two matches on Friday against UAB and North Alabama, falling 5-0 in both contests. On Saturday, March 21, they fell to South Carolina, 5-0, and North Alabama again, 5-0.
Women’s Basketball
Austin Peay State University’s women’s basketball team accepted a bid to the 2026 Women’s National Invitation Tournament and hosted UT Rio Grande Valley in the first round. This marked APSU’s first-ever appearance in the WNIT and its first postseason tournament appearance since competing in the Women’s Basketball Invitational in 2022.
The team fell 71-59 to UTRGV on Thursday, March 19, ending its season.
Men’s Golf
Austin Peay’s men’s golf team shot a six-over 294 in the first round of Florida State’s Seminole Intercollegiate on Sunday at Seminole Legacy Golf Club. The Govs were 15-over par as a team in the second round before play was suspended.
Led by a 22nd-place finish from John Mark Mills, Austin Peay finished in 15th place with a score of 912 at Florida State’s Seminole Intercollegiate on Tuesday, March 17, at Seminole Legacy Golf Club.
Women’s Tennis
Austin Peay’s women’s tennis team returned home to celebrate Senior Day and take on Cumberland on Saturday, March 21, at the Governors Tennis Courts.
The Governors improved to 9-2, with losses to Furman and No. 13 Vanderbilt, after earning a 7-0 victory against Cumberland.
Men’s Tennis
Austin Peay’s men’s tennis team faced Cumberland for its second home match of the season on Saturday, March 21, at the Governors Tennis Courts.
The Govs earned their second straight home win with a 5-2 victory against Cumberland.
Track and Field
Austin Peay’s track and field team competed in the Margaret Simmons Invitational, March 20-21, in Murray, Kentucky.
Emma Tucker and Madelyn Kocik both earned wins, with Kocik also recording a personal best in the triple jump. The Govs sat in third place following the first day of Murray State’s Margaret Simmons Invitational on Friday at Roy Stewart Stadium.
Senior Amani Sharif won the long jump as the Governors earned six top-three finishes on the final day of the meet on Saturday, March 21, at Roy Stewart Stadium.
