Austin Peay women’s basketball lost 70-68 to Jacksonville on a buzzer-beating jumper Saturday, Jan. 31, at F&M Bank Arena after a back-and-forth game that saw the lead change multiple times in the second half.
Jim’Miyah Branton led the Governors with 15 points and six assists, and Lameria Thomas posted her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Austin Peay carried a 43-38 lead into halftime after closing the second quarter with key baskets from Branton and Mya Williams.
The Govs extended their advantage to eight points midway through the third quarter, but Jacksonville responded with a scoring run to stay within striking distance. The Dolphins opened the fourth quarter with consecutive three-pointers to take the lead, and the teams traded scores in the final minutes.
After Branton tied the game with a layup with two seconds remaining, Jacksonville’s Carmaya Brown hit the game-winning jumper as time expired. Austin Peay outscored Jacksonville 21-14 in bench points and 15-7 in fast-break points, but committed 22 fouls compared to the Dolphins’ 18.
Austin Peay travels to North Alabama for a 6 p.m. matchup Wednesday, Feb. 4.
