Austin Peay State University’s baseball team traveled to Madison, Alabama, on March 24 to take on the University of Alabama at Toyota Field, home of the minor league Rocket City Trash Pandas. The Crimson Tide defeated the Governors 6-2.
Dillon Adkins started on the mound for the Governors. He loaded the bases before walking in a run. Will Plattner followed with a sacrifice fly that allowed Justin Lebron to score and make it a 2-0 game. Adkins was then replaced by Chance Cox, who provided several solid innings in relief.
In the top of the third inning, Trevor Conley hit a double into right field. Paris Pridgen followed with a groundout to third base that advanced Conley to third. Zion Taylor then hit a groundout that allowed Conley to score, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Ray Velazquez followed with a hit to left field that resulted in a fielding error near the construction area beyond the wall, allowing him to reach base and tie the game at 2-2.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Alabama scored three runs. Luke Vaughn started the rally with a double, followed by another double from Brennan Holt that brought Vaughn home after a Governors error. Jason Torres then hit the third double of the inning, driving in two runs to give Alabama a 5-2 lead.
The Crimson Tide added one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Bryce Fowler RBI single. The Governors were unable to respond in the top of the ninth, and the game ended 6-2.
Austin Peay will continue its nine-game road trip with a three-game series against the University of Central Arkansas this Friday through Sunday. After dropping last weekend’s series to Lipscomb University, the Governors will look to bounce back against the Bears.
