APSU’s Lady Govs traveled to Belmont University on Friday, Oct. 21, losing the OVC match in five sets (19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15, 15-13) according to letsgopeay.com.
After the first two sets, the match was tied 1-1. The Lady Govs neglected to take advantage of the 10 Belmont errors in the third set, and APSU also uncharacteristically posted eight kills in the frame. This lead to the Bruins taking the lead in the match.
APSU recovered in the fourth set. The Lady Govs took an early lead of 7-4, and a 7-point run pushed them to 14-5. The Lady Govs were then able to take the fourth set to force the tiebreaking fifth set.
In the fifth and final set, junior Ashley Slay would use her 13th kill of the night to score APSU’s last point at 13-9. The Lady Govs were called on four errors, and the Bruins capitalized on the mistakes by scoring 6 consecutive points to put an end to the match.
Even though the Lady Govs dropped this match, there were still some standout players. Sophomore Kaylee Taff reached a career high of 15 kills in the match. The Lady Govs’ defense outplayed the Bruins’ by posting 81 digs, 22 of which were achieved by freshman Ginny Gerig.
According to letsgopeay.com, the Lady Govs got back into the groove of things when they picked up a three-set victory against Tennessee State University (25-14, 25-14,25-20) on Saturday, Oct. 22.
APSU dominated the first set by taking a 9-2 lead early, and scoring 6 straight points, which included two consecutive kills from Slay to end the first frame.
The Lady Govs posted 17 kills in the first set, and the offense continued to dictate the match in the second set as well. APSU took the lead by scoring the first 5 points, and Allie O’Reilly contributed with two aces at the beginning of the set. Although TSU managed to battle back and come within 1 point of the Lady Govs at 10-9, APSU regrouped and scored the next 6 points to lead their way to a 2-0 in the match.
TSU put up a good fight against APSU in the third set. The Tigers tied the frame at 8-8, and even took the lead at 8-9. The Lady Govs recovered and scored 9 of the next 11 points to give them a 17-12 lead. The Lady Govs continued to play solid, and took the third set to get the win.
The Lady Govs outhit the Tigers with 45 kills to TSU’s 31. Kaylee Taff and Christina White led the Lady Govs in kills with 11 each.
The APSU Lady Govs’ next match will be against Alabama A&M on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at home.
