HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – Over the course of another two-day tournament, the Governors fought head-to-head against Murray State to conclude their fall season. The tournament took place between Murray and Austin Peay State University exclusively, featuring a combination of three best ball matches, three alternate shot matches, and seven singles matches.
This is the first time that the Racers have beat the Govs since the 2021-2022 season opener at the Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Missouri. The Governors and Racers faced each other previously in the Govs’ last tournament, the Lady Red Wolves Classic. There, APSU came in sixth against Murray in sixteenth.
The streak may be broken, but the Governors played well in the Battle at the Border. After Monday’s best ball and alternate shot matches, they held a one point lead over Murray.
In the best ball matches, junior Erica Scutt and freshman Jillian Breedlove were paired together to get a 4&3 win. The next pairing was graduate student Kady Foshaug and sophomore Autumn Spencer, who secured a 2Up win. Finally the Governors’ best ball matches was rounded out by the pairing of juniors Kaley Campbell and Maggie Glass, who gained .5 points to bring the score to 2.5-0.5 at the conclusion of the best ball matches.
Some of these pairings were shifted for the alternate shot matches, which was cut short due to impending darkness. Campbell and Glass remained together, leading the team and winning the final three holes for another point. Next, Scutt and Spencer were put together, winning the seventh and eight holes but ultimately falling to the Racers. Foshaug was paired with freshman Abby Hirtzel for the alternate shot matches. After this portion of the tournament, the score was 3.5-2.5 in the Governors’ favor.
In Tuesday’s singles, back-to-back league honoree Payton Carter carried the Racers into the victory.
Still, APSU competed well on the course with Glass halving her match and Spencer winning the final match of the tournament.
The final score came to 8.0-5.0.
While the Governors’ fall campaign has concluded, they will take to the course again for the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate at the Highlands Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama over the course of March 4-6.
