APSU baseball won two in a row during a three-game series with UT Martin over the weekend which was highlighted by a 22 run game on Sunday.
APSU dropped the first game 3-6, but answered back with a 5-4 win to close out Saturday’s doubleheader and exploded with a 22-11 win in the lone game on Sunday.
The first game of the weekend came down to a four-run fourth inning for the Skyhawks. Jacques Pucheu allowed 12 hits, a season-high, and allowed four earned runs. Both teams traded off runs in the second inning. The fourth inning featured eight batters at the mound for UT Martin. After the fourth inning, APSU was unable to recover from the deficit.
Game two featured plenty of drama as APSU erased a 4-1 deficit to tie the series at one game apiece. Parker Phillips got the ball rolling on the comeback as he hit a single home run to cut the Martin lead in half. This was the first run of four in the seventh inning. Three runs later and APSU had tied the game at 4-4. Malcom Tipler secured an RBI single to help secure the 5-4 lead for the Govs. After APSU secured the lead in seventh they never relinquished it and secured the game two victory.
Game three yielded the most exciting results with the Govs posting 22 runs. Matt Joslin, Phillips and Andrew Flaherty combined for 19 RBI’s in the contest. Joslin went for seven, while Phillips and Flaherty both went for six.
A note to make of this game, the Govs only went one inning without scoring any runs. APSU trailed 4-1 in the top of the second but a six run inning in the top of the second grabbed the lead for the visiting Govs. The lead was never released. APSU led 14-10 entering the top of the seventh. They combined for eight runs in the last three innings to help blow open the game at the end.
APSU moves to 22-17 (13-8 OVC) on the season. Their next contest will be Tuesday, April 23, at MTSU.
