The outdoor women’s track and field team took a third place victory after fighting illness and injury all season in the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships over the second weekend of May.
This marks the third straight season that APSU has finished in the top three. The Lady Govs earned 81 points, behind Eastern Illinois (163) and Tennessee State University (144.5). The Lady Govs finished above Southeast Missouri (79), Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (72) Jacksonville State, (65), Murray State (65), Tennessee Technological University (59.5), Eastern Kentucky (52), Belmont (32) and Morehead State (5).
Senior Kymmalett Ross, sophomore Sonja White, senior Breigh Jones and senior Lamontra Robinson took an early lead winning second place in the 4x100m relays, giving them an early 8 points.
Ross later earned third in the 100m dash, losing to TSU by four-thousandths of a second, according to letsgopeay.com. Terri Morros earned third place in the 400m dash. Jones came in fourth, and sophomore Allysha Scott earned sixth place.
Morris also had a seventh place 200m dash. According to letsgopeay.com, Morris fought a hamstring injury but ran the anchor leg on the first place team in the 4x400m relay along with Ross, Jones and Scott. This was the first win in this category for APSU in 16 years. This could allow this team to have some post-season play.
Junior Kaylnn Pitts and Chanice Jones earned fifth and eighth in the triple jump. Freshman Keyondria Ross finished eighth.
Amia Butler earned seventh place in the heptathlon over the two-day event.
Another gold victory for the Lady Govs was freshman Savannah Amato, who earned first place in pole vaulting. With this gold, Amato improved her odds for a 2016 NCAA East Preliminary berth.
Junior Mynah Johnson earned fifth place while White earned eighth place in the 100m hurdles. According to letsgopeay.com, this is the third season in a row APSU has put two hurdlers in the 100m final.
The team is losing five seniors, Michella Carter, Alexis Eldridge, LaMontra Robinson, Kymmalett Ross and Breigh Jones.
