CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The APSU women’s golf team dominated the 54 holes of the 23rd Annual APSU Intercollegiate tournament earlier this week, rounding out a 31-shot win, individual and team tournament records and the first home win since 2015.
This marks the fourth win of the APSU Intercollegiate, alongside two more wins in 2000 and 2002, respectively.
While the entirety of the team played well, graduate student Kady Foshaug and junior Erica Scutt led the governors in the tournament, placing first and second as individual medalists over the course of Monday and Tuesday at the Clarksville Country Club.
Both Foshaug and Scutt broke the tournament’s standing 54-hole record with matching five-under scores of 211. The previous record was set two years ago at 214 by Belmont’s Kendall Maynard.
Notably, Foshaug and Scutt’s individual honors also mark the third time individual medalists in the tournament have been Governors, following in the footsteps of alumni Jessica Cathey in 2015 and Staci Lynch in 2006.
Foshaug also broke the 36-hole indivdual record for the APSU Intercollegiate with a score of 137 compared to the old record of 139, with twelve total birdies, three total bogeys, and eight-under par among the three rounds she played to earn a tournament lead in par-five scoring.
Just behind Fosaug’s 36-hole score, Scutt followed suit with a score of 138, also breaking the former tournament record. She led the tournament in par-three scoring with three-under par and a tournament best of 42 pars.
Following Foshaug and Scutt for the governors were freshman Jillian Breedlove (217), junior Kaley Campbell (228), and junior Maggie Glass (232). Playing unattached, APSU also boasted strong performances from freshman Abby Hirtzel (227) and sophomore Autumn Spencer (237).
Breedlove started strong with a three-way tie for third place by the end of the first 36-holes, rounded out with a fourth place finish for the tournament, and shot the best score of the Governors on the last 18 (a one-under 71).
Finishing in 12th place and tied for 15th place respectively, Campbell and Glass rounded out APSU’s team standings. Glass, recently nominated as ASUN golfer of the week last Thursday, earned a team best six spots in the final round.
Playing as individuals, Hirtzel and Spencer finished in 11th and 20th respectively. Hirtzel also showed well as the top unattached individual finisher.
The team, led by Governor’s head coach Jessica Combs, had a lot of momentum heading into the tournament, and it showed during the two-day tournament. Alongside a recent victory at the Hoover Invitational, winning the APSU Intercollegiate granted the team their second straight win, as well as their ninth tournament win under Combs.
Altogether, the energy was right heading into the tournament, and the Governors started strong on Monday, keeping the momentum up through the conclusion of the tournament on Tuesday.
In the first two rounds alone, the team had a 26-shot lead, broke the 18-hole tournament team record of 290 with a score of 282, and broke the 36-hole record of 584 held by Murray in 2011 with a score of 572.
By the finale of the third round, the old 54-hole record also fell with a one-under 863 team score.
In the final results, APSU was followed by North Alabama (894), Butler (906), Belmont University (917), Eastern Illinois (960), and Tennessee State (1033). North Alabama and Belmont are also members of the ASUN Conference.
The Governor’s season will continue at Southern Illinois’ Saluki Invitational at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Missouri over the course of another two-day tournament on October 2-3.
