APSU Men’s Tennis (5-6, 3-5 OVC) fell (5-2) to the Belmont Bruins on Saturday, April 20 in a head to head match at the Governor’s Tennis Center.
The Bruins put APSU under pressure throughout the series to 5-2.
Following last season’s tragic lost against the Bruins Governors came out on the court with a fight.
Hunter Sanders and Anton Damberg picked up singles wins, but the Bruins dominated the doubles portion of the match, taking the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches,6-2.
The Govs started to fight back in singles, but the Bruins did sweep at No. 2 singles to go up 2-0.
At the No. 1 spot, Almantas Ozelis took on Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year Hendrik Inno.
Ozelis won the first set, 6-4, but Inno came back winning three sets and putting Belmont up 3-0.
Timo Kiesslich lost the first set to Vincent Sterkens but came back for a second-set win.
Sterkens got an early break in the third set and secured the match for Belmont.
The Govs took the final set in singles, 6-2, to put them on the board.
This match was also Senior Day for the Governors as they honored Sanders, Chad Woodham and Ozelis.
The Govs will enter the OVC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play the No. 5 seed, Eastern Illinois, at 2 p.m., on Friday, April 26 at Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, Tennessee. The Govs beat the Panthers 4-0 in early April.
