UPDATE: Five were injured in a drive-by shooting in the 900 block of Carpenter Street; one victim has died.

One to two blocks from campus, a shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Monday, March 23.

Two Life Flight helicopters landed on the intramural fields as critically-injured individuals were transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center, according to a news release by Natalie Hall, Clarksville Police Department public information officer.

According to Hall, the victims were at a cook-out in the 900 block of Carpenter Street when individuals in a white Kia Soul fired shots at the group, wounding five. The victims are 31-year-old Timothy Russel, 23-year-old Dajuan Dowlen, 28-year-old Tony Greene, Jr., 27-year-old Quinton Fentress and 27-year-old Vincent Pardue.

Pardue died as a result of his injuries, Hall said. Russell and Dowlen were sent to Gateway Regional Medical Center, and Greene, Jr., and Fentress were Life Flighted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

The white Kia Soul is believed to bear Tennessee Tag R0393D, and the vehicle was occupied by three black males, according to Hall. 

This is an ongoing investigation, and the Clarksville Police Department urges anyone with information about this case or the location of the vehicle to contact Det. Michael Ulrey at 931-648-0656 ext. 5483 or the TIPS line at 931-645-TIPS (8477).

On campus, emergency response vehicles barricaded the road in front of the Memorial Health Red Barn around 9:15 p.m. The shooting was less than two blocks from the Child Learning Center.

Prior to the helicopters landing, an intramural softball game was in progress when Clarksville Police evacuated the field.

“They were just bringing the injured here,” said APSU sophomore Michael Taverna. “It’s kind of crazy. It’s all here on campus.”

Taverna said he was watching the intramural game when the evacuation happened.
