Phase II Housing Construction is scheduled to be finished by Thursday, Aug. 1, for move-in day on Thursday, Aug. 22.
Joe Mills, director of Housing/Residence Life and Dining Services, said the new halls are 92 percent full of as Tuesday, July 2.
Governors Terrace North and Governors Terrace South are going to house upperclassmen while Eriksson Hall is going to house freshmen. Eriksson Hall will also be the location for two new food venues.
Mills said one of the venues is going to have a grill, which serves food such as hamburgers, wings and grilled chicken-type food. The second venue is going to serve Italian with pizza, sub sandwiches, pasta and bread sticks.
Mills said APSU is trying to do a ribbon cutting for the opening of the residence halls since Eriksson Hall is named after Martha Dickerson Eriksson, whose husband, Lars Eriksson, gave the largest donation in APSU history to the university.
Mills said there are several plans for dining coming up for the Fall semester. “We are going to expand the café in the Sundquist,” he said. He said the plan is to make it bigger and offer more options. Mills said there are also plans for all new tables and chairs in the food court and Einstein’s Bagels will get a few minor renovations.
After the construction of the new residence halls is completed, Mills said there are not any plans for building new ones. However, the current residence halls will continue to get updates and renovations as needed.
“I think with the enrollment and the number of beds on campus, we are right where we need to be,” Mills said.
Mills said the new residence halls are going to change campus forever, and he is really excited to get it finished and get back to business helping students.
“It is hard work to get new buildings, but it definitely puts [APSU} ahead of other [universities} in the state and in the southeast. I know that students are coming here and that they are consciously making a decision about where to go to school,” Mills said. He said a factor in their decision is what the housing is like and if they feel comfortable.
