CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After a tough loss to Central Arkansas last Thursday, Austin Peay came back in another conference match against North Alabama. APSU won the Senior Day game thanks to a late header by junior defender Lindsey McMahon assisted by senior midfielder Tori Case.
McMahon’s goal was made possible by a well set-up header off of Case’s free kick. The kick came deep in the box for a perfect header opportunity by McMahon for the winning point.
The Governors started the match strong with the first shot of the game being by APSU junior and midfielder Alec Baumgaurdt. While this shot was saved by North Alabama goalie Adriana Wright, it set the mood for the rest of the game and, eventually, McMahon’s score.
While UNA ended up having more total shots in the game, the Governors protected their home turf on Morgan Bros. Soccer Field with solid saves and a more accurate shooting ratio. APSU had a total of 6 shots and 4 shots on goal compared to the Lions’ 12 shots and and 2 shots on goal.
Alongside shots by Baumguardt (3 shots, 2 on goal) and McMahon (1 shot, 1 on goal), APSU saw shots by sophomore midfielder Kassidy Schenk (1 shot, 1 on goal) and freshman forward Alana Owens (1 shot).
McMahon’s success this game during Sunday’s game should come as no surprise, though. McMahon has been a consistently strong defender for the Governors, having played for a total of 1248 minutes this season alone, including the entirety of all but one game this season, and having started for 49 games in a row. McMahon’s assisted point Sunday was her second career goal and her first career game winner.
Just like teammate Hannah Zahn last Thursday, McMahon scored with less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half, netting the goal in the 81st minute.
Case was also recognized prior to the game as one of six seniors on the team, along with midfielder Chloe Murphy, midfielder Hannah Wilson, forward Annabel Anderson, midfielder Emma Dalton, and defender Kirsten Monk. Wilson, Anderson, and Case were starters for Sunday’s game.
UNA now continues a losing streak of 3 games in a row, while APSU continues a perfect 4-0 record against North Alabama and rebounds from their loss against Central Arkansas to prepare for their next conference matchup.
The Governors’ season will continue on the road against Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday, October 5 at Pickering Field At The FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Florida. The game will begin at 6 pm.
