Lady Govs soccer saw their undefeated record in the OVC fall over the weekend with a 1-0 loss to SIU- Edwardsville. APSU managed to scrap together seven shots to SIUE’s 12, but failed to convert the opportunities into goals on Oct. 14.
SIUE (8-5-2, 3-1-2 OVC) opened scoring in the 28th minute when Courtney Benning’s header directed the ball past junior Lindsey Todd and into the goal. Benning received a cross from six yards before heading it home. The loss also serves as Todd’s first loss as the starting goalkeeper in 2016.
With the loss APSU (8-5-2, 3-1-2) fell to third in the OVC while SIUE held onto second place. Murray State stays on top of the OVC at 5-0-2.
Offensive opportunities were present throughout the game for the Lady Govs as they turned three of their seven shots on goal. In addition, the team generated seven corners, but failed in getting the final touch to match SIUE’s lone goal.
Centerback Mary Ruth Locastro had the opportunities to push forward of the corners which allowed her to lead the team in shots with four. Following behind her was Pamela Penaloza, Nicole Wojcik, and Jennifer Smith with one a piece.
Main attackers Kirstin Robertson and Gina Fabbro finished without being able to create a shot for either of them.
