The Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team secured its first win 63-56 in the ASUN Conference Tournament on March 4 in Jacksonville at UNF Arena against the Lipscomb Bisons.
Austin Peay came out strong and never let up, leading the Bisons through all four quarters. The success did not come without the help of star freshman Jim’Miyah Branton, who posted 18 points in 37 minutes and shot 10 of 14 from the free-throw line. The Govs took control of every aspect of the floor, with Anovia Sheals recording 10 rebounds, three steals and 17 points. Austin Peay also dominated in bench points, as Jade Rucker added 10 points in 18 minutes off the bench.
For the Lipscomb Bisons, this loss marked not only their exit from the tournament but also a farewell to senior guard Molly Heard. Heard was the standout Bison, posting 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the loss. The Bisons shot a perfect 100% from the free-throw line but failed to outrebound Austin Peay. Along with 21 turnovers, it was not Lipscomb’s day at UNF Arena.
The Austin Peay women’s basketball team will look to continue its hot streak, as the Govs are set to face the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in the ASUN Quarterfinals at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on March 5 at 11 a.m.
