Austin Peay State University’s softball team went 5-0 at the Governors Classic at Cathi Maynard Park from Feb. 27 to March 1, earning three run-rule wins along the way.
On Feb. 27, the Govs opened with an 11-0, five-inning victory against Stonehill, powered by six home runs to tie a single-game program record. Natalie Burns hit a three-run homer in the first, while Kiley Hinton added an inside-the-park home run. Cameron Grayson tossed a two-hit shutout in the circle.
Later that day, Austin Peay defeated Southern Indiana 8-0 in another five-inning run-rule win. Kiley Hinton drove in two runs early, Sammie Shelander added two RBIs, and Ashlyn Graklanoff contributed an RBI double. Alanah Jones allowed just one hit in five innings to secure the shutout.
On Feb. 28, the Governors earned a 9-1, five-inning victory against Central Michigan. Katie Raper sparked the offense with a leadoff home run and later added an RBI, while Shelander launched a two-run homer. Jones picked up the win, striking out five.
Austin Peay followed with an 8-7 walk-off win over Ohio later that day. Trailing in the seventh, the Govs loaded the bases before Jade Castillo delivered a double down the right-field line, and a throwing error allowed all three runners to score.
The tournament concluded March 1 with a 10-2, six-inning win against Stonehill. A five-run fifth inning broke the game open, highlighted by a two-run home run from Kiley Hinton and Jade Castillo’s first career home run as the Govs secured their third run-rule victory of the weekend.
Austin Peay now looks ahead to hosting the Cathi Maynard Invitational March 6-8 at Cathi Maynard Park, where they will face Butler at 2 p.m. and Western Michigan at 4:30 p.m. on Friday; Butler twice on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; and Western Michigan at noon Sunday.
