Austin Peay State University athletics had a packed week of competition from March 31-April 4, with multiple teams in action across conference and nonconference matchups.
Austin Peay State University’s baseball team, after coming off an Atlantic Sun Conference series win at Central Arkansas, returned to the diamond in Southeastern Conference competition against Tennessee. On Tuesday, March 31, they were outhit by the Volunteers as they fell 13-4. They began their weekend series with a 5-2 win against Eastern Kentucky, as senior Ryker Walton threw a season-high five innings and struck out six batters on Thursday, April 2. They fell to Eastern Kentucky 7-6 in game two of their weekend series Friday, April 3. The APSU baseball team won its third Atlantic Sun Conference series after coming away with a 12-9 victory over Eastern Kentucky to close out the weekend series Saturday, April 4.
Austin Peay State University’s softball team hosted Bellarmine on Friday and Saturday at Cathi Maynard Park, April 3-4. The team needed only nine innings to outscore Bellarmine 23-0 in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader, earning an 8-0 victory in Game 1 before beating the Knights 15-0 in Game 2 on Friday, April 3. Sammie Shelander went 3-for-3 from the plate with four RBIs and a home run, while Cameron Grayson tossed five scoreless innings in the circle as the team earned an 11-3 win to secure a series victory over Bellarmine Saturday, April 4.
Austin Peay State University’s lacrosse team prepared for its fifth Atlantic Sun Conference game and road game of the season when it faced Kennesaw State. The Govs came back from an early 6-1 deficit but ultimately dropped a 10-8 conference game Saturday, April 4.
Austin Peay State University’s women’s tennis team traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where they took on Western Kentucky. The team earned a 4-1 victory Saturday, April 4.
Austin Peay State University’s track and field team competed in two meets in Texas from Thursday through Saturday, April 2-4. Senior Amani Sharif highlighted the trip to Texas State’s Bobcat Invite and Texas’ Texas Relays by winning the long jump Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Austin Peay State University’s beach volleyball team returned home for the Austin Peay Classic on Friday and Saturday. The team went 1-1 on the opening day Friday, April 3, defeating McKendree 5-0 and falling to Texas A&M-Kingsville 4-1. The Govs also went 1-1 on the final day Saturday, April 4, defeating Tennessee Tech 3-0 but falling to Central Arkansas 3-2.
