The Austin Peay Lady Governors were in two Ohio Valley Conference series match ups in Nashville on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21.
In the first game of a double header against Belmont, the Lady Govs got off to an early one-run lead in the top of the first inning on a Kayla Davidson home run to right field. Pitcher Lauren de Castro kept the Bruins relatively quiet in the first four innings, preserving APSU’s 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Lady Govs extended their lead with two runs on five hits and RBIs by catcher Mel Pavel and first baseman Abby Guest. APSU then turned into a defensive battle as neither team scored until the top of the seventh, when the Lady Govs put up two more runs, increasing their lead to 5-0.
The Bruins came back in the bottom half of the seventh and scored five runs to send the game into extra innings. The Lady Govs wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the eighth, loading the bases and setting up De Castro for a grand slam home run that gave them a 9-5 lead. APSU sealed their victory in the bottom of the eighth and moved to 5-13 in OVC play and 14-22 overall.
In the second game, Belmont got out to a small lead early but they were unable to keep the Lady Govs offense down the entire game.
APSU held the Bruins to only one run on six hits with a great pitching performance from senior Morgan Brewer, who had five strikeouts and one walk in seven innings pitched.
The Lady Govs did not get on the scoreboard until the seventh inning when they scored three runs on errors by the Bruins and sealed a sweep with a 3-1 win.
The second day of the Nashville weekend series saw the Lady Govs take on the Tennessee State Tigers on Sunday. The Lady Govs seemed to have everything under control in the beginning of the first game until the bottom third, where the Lady Tigers got two runs on two hits and were helped by two errors by the Lady Govs.
Offensively, the APSU could not get anything going, as they were unable to get on the scoreboard and managed to get only one hit. The Lady Tigers quickly ended the Lady Govs win streak, handing APSU a 5-0 loss.
In the second game of the double header, TSU broke the game wide open with a four-run inning, led 5-0 and put the Lady Govs in a seemingly desperate position. APSU was unable to respond to the big inning by TSU and the Lady Tigers swept the Lady Govs, sending them home on a low note, handing them their 14th defeat in the OVC.
