The Austin Peay State University football team (7-3, 3-2 ASUN) continues to push through their 3-game road trip as they took down the Kennesaw State Owls (5-5, 1-3 ASUN) in enemy territory 31-14 on Saturday.
In what was a turnover-filled day for the defense, the Govs forced five takeaways disrupting any sort of momentum that the Owls could muster on offense.
The defensive efforts were led by Demetries Ford, who had his first-ever game with multiple interceptions. Ford is close to beating the current school record for passes defended this season just one shy of Corey Phillips’ 19 in 2002.
“We knew that our game plan was good and to just trust our game plan,” said Ford. “Then with the interceptions and the turnovers, that just came from us playing the way we know how to play.”
The offensive side of the game took a little longer to develop for the Govs, but the turnovers helped set them up creating more opportunities for points.
The rushing attack garners the spotlight in a defensive game like this one where the Govs running back Jevon Jackson led the way with his second half performance on 10 carries for 79-yards and two touchdowns.
“I feel like when I have my opportunities, I got out there and I did what I had to do,” said Jackson.
Jackson had back-to-back touchdowns to put the Govs up three possessions by the early fourth quarter.
The Govs head coach Scotty Walden has all the confidence in the world for his football team coming off two huge wins on the road as they look ahead to the postseason in the Football Championship Subdivision.
“We are a playoff team. I know with all my heart and soul, we are a freaking playoff team,” said head coach Scotty Walden “They just tell us where to go. You tell us to go to Maine, Vermont, or wherever the heck you want, the Govs are going to show up man, anyone anytime.”
The Govs are not lacking confidence heading into their season finale game against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Kickoff Saturday will be at 11 A.M at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
