Scott Pilgrim is a graphic novel series created by Brian Lee O’Malley in 2004 and concluded in 2010.
The graphic novel series focused on the titular character Scott Pilgrim, a 23 year old bass player for a local indie band.
One day, Scott comes across a woman with supernatural powers named Ramona Flowers, the two fall in love with each other but before Scott can date Ramona, he must defeat her seven evil exes.
The series has been well known for its artstyle, story, characters and charm, and has been very popular among teenagers and young adults.
Scott Pilgrim has even adapted to other media platforms including the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, released in 2010 featuring Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers.
The same year the movie was released, video game company Ubisoft released a video game based off of the series for the Xbox 360 through the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation 3 through the PlayStation Store.
The game was available for both platforms until it was delisted in 2014. Due to the game being a digital-only title with no physical release, it was impossible to acquire the game after it’s delisting.
However, late in 2020, Ubisoft announced that the game will re-release in January 14, 2021 as a Complete Edition for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Google Stadia and Nintendo Switch, celebrating the films 10th Anniversary.
Although it has been 10 years since the game released, the cult classic still holds up for older and younger gamers.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game-Complete Edition is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up game with a retro aesthetic, featuring seven levels, with each level having one of Ramona’s seven evil exes as the boss of each level.
The game allows four player co-op online and offline, with playable characters including Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Kim Pine, Stephen Stills and NegaScott which can be unlocked during the game.
The Complete Edition also includes all of its downloadable content packs that were previously available when the game was released in 2010, including its different game modes and two extra playable characters Wallace Wells and Knives Chau.
Each character has their own unique movesets and special abilities, with more moves that can be unlocked as the player levels up their character of choice. The characters in the games also have heart points and gut points.
Heart points act as their health and can be replenished with snacks or meals.
Gut points allow players to use a character’s special ability or revive players who have lost all their health and snacks can also regenerate gut points.
Defeated enemies also drop coins, which can be used to purchase items at a shop such as snacks and accessories, which provides boosts for the player’s character.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game-Complete Edition’s well deserved return leaves its classic retro beat ‘em up open for experience for a new generation of gamers, with its classic art style reminiscent of the graphic novel along with addicting replay value, it’s a fun game to play by oneself and the perfect game to play with friends.
