Funeral services for former APSU men’s basketball coach and athletic director Dr. George Fisher, 90, will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, in the chapel of Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home.
Fisher died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at Grace Healthcare.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Arrangements were entrusted to Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home.
Fisher, known as “Coach” to many, was associated with the APSU athletics program from 1947-1977 as a player, standout coach and later as athletic director. He was the first recipient of the Joy Award as the Most Valuable Senior Athlete in 1947. Chosen to succeed the legendary Dave Aaron as basketball coach in 1962, Fisher was later selected to serve as athletic director in 1972. Along the way, he also served as APSU’s head golf coach and freshman basketball coach, and he coached the track and field team to two Volunteer State Athletic Conference titles. Fisher was a part of the first APSU Athletics Hall of Fame class in 1978 and was only the third APSU inductee into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 1988.
After leaving as athletic director in 1977, Fisher remained at APSU in the Physical Education Department as an instructor into the 1990s. He also continued his association with the athletic department, becoming chairman of the APSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993, a role he served until the early 2000s.
