This weekend, it didn’t feel right not being on campus to cover an APSU sporting event.
A rare occurrence happened with no home events, and I thought for a split second I was going to have a social life again. But then, I remembered college football games were on Saturday, then the NFL season kicked off Sunday. That ended any chance of me moving away from a television.
But enough about my non-existent “social life”. You came here to see what’s coming up in APSU sports. Fortunately, this past weekend is the only time period until Thanksgiving break where there are zero home games for the Govs and Lady Govs. Football, soccer, volleyball, and cross country are all in progress, while men’s and women’s golf and tennis will begin over the next couple of weeks.
Here is a full outlook of what’s to come the remainder of September.
Govs Football
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 13 vs. Chattanooga
- Sept. 20 at Eastern Illinois
- Sept. 27 at Illinois State
What to watch for?
- Obviously, it’s the opening game at the new Governors Stadium. There isn’t much more to say, considering we’ve talked about it ever since construction began. For the play on the field, stay tuned. I’ll have plenty of coverage of this game, as well as the two road contests in Illinois, throughout the month.
Lady Govs Volleyball
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 12 at Purdue and Western Michigan (WKU Invitational)
- Sept. 13 at Western Kentucky (WKU Invitational)
- Sept. 16 vs. Chattanooga
- Sept. 18 at Tennessee (UT Invitational)
- Sept. 19 at Montana State and Mercer (UT Invitational)
- Sept. 20 at Memphis (UT Invitational)
- Sept. 26 vs. UT Martin*
- Sept. 27 vs. SEMO*
- Sept. 30 vs. Murray State*
What to watch for?
- I’m just ready for the home opener against Chattanooga so I can finally see what this Lady Govs team looks like in person. It’s certainly a busy schedule with a lot of time away from Clarksville, but there are tough tests here that will prepare APSU for conference play beginning on Sept. 26. As for player to watch: Jada Stotts. The senior outside hitter has 95 kills in eight games already this season.
Lady Govs Soccer
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 12 vs. Ole Miss
- Sept. 19 vs. Samford
- Sept. 26 vs. Eastern Kentucky*
- Sept. 28 vs. Morehead State*
What to watch for?
- Several things. First off, the Lady Govs face another SEC opponent in Ole Miss that will really test them in terms of physicality, so we’ll see how facing Alabama two weeks ago helps them prepare for the Rebels. Secondly, scoring. The Lady Govs have been shut out in three consecutive games, so the attacking aspect of the game has to show some promise before conference play begins. Speaking of conference play, it begins on the 26th. But the biggest game on the calender is against Morehead State, the defending champs whom APSU lost to in the semifinals last year.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 19 – APSU Invitational
What to watch for?
- Staying competitive against fellow OVC schools. On the women’s side, APSU finished ahead of JSU, TSU, and UTM in Chattanooga, which is a positive sign moving forward. For the men, they’ll look to continue improving after topping JSU and TSU, while also defeating Martin, in the same meet.
Women’s Golf
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 8-9 Drake Creek Invitational (Ledbetter, Ky.)
- Sept. 21 Saluki Invitational (Carbondale, Ill.)
- Sept. 28-30 Chris Banister Golf Classic (Glencoe, Ala.)
What to watch for?
- Jessica Cathey. She returns as the top player for APSU, having led the team in scoring average at 77.71 per round. After finishing T-8 in the OVC Championship, Cathey is poised for a break-out season.
Men’s Golf
Upcoming schedule
- Sept. 14-16 Golfweek Conference Challenge (Burlington, Iowa)
- Sept. 22-23 Inverness Intercollegiate (Toledo, Ohio)
- Sept. 29-30 Cardinal Intercollegiate (Simpsonville, Ky.)
What to watch for?
- Who steps up as the number one? Marco Iten, Anthony Bradley, Alasdair MacLennan, and Trey Tarpley are gone, meaning a number of guys will have a chance to take over as the top golfer. Look for the lone senior, Tucker Wallace, to be the front runner.
Women’s Tennis
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 12 UTM Tournament
- Sept. 19 APSU Invitational
- Sept. 26 Evansville Tournament
What to watch for?
- Ornella Di Salvo. The Argentinian became the most-consistent player for the Lady Govs before season’s end, winning four consecutive matches from Feb. 23 to March 9. Definitely keep an eye on Di Salvo as she becomes the full-time number one for APSU.
Men’s Tennis
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 19 at MTSU Tournament
- Sept. 27 at ITA Men’s Nationals in Tulsa, Okla.
What to watch for?
- Aleksas Tverijonas. The senior went 20-5 last season, and will return as the Govs top guy. His doubles partner, Jasmin Ademovic, is gone, meaning he’ll have a new player by his side to build off a 14-7 doubles record.
Lady Govs Softball
Upcoming schedule:
- Sept. 20 at Memphis and Northeast Mississippi (in Martin)
- Sept. 26 at Vol State CC
- Sept. 30 vs. Cumberland
What to watch for?
- This is just a preseason slate for the Lady Govs, so it’s just a chance to figure out what they have for 2015. But still, it’s softball at this time of year, which is pretty cool.
