This weekend the APSU’s Women’s Soccer team faced off Eastern Illinois on the pitch at noon on Saturday with the conditions being subpar at best with the constant rain. Nonetheless, the two teams faced off in what would go on to be a defensive game ending in a tie of 1-1.
The first score of the game came relatively early by the Panthers. After receiving a corner kick the Panthers made sure not to squander the opportunity to put points on the board, However, it wouldn’t be until the 85 minute mark that the Governors would tie up the game; that goal came from freshman Anna McPhie, her third of the season so far placing her for tied first on the team.
The game would have two overtime periods and still no team could outlast the other and go home the sole victor; but that didn’t mean the Governors didn’t have anything to celebrate. All the Governors needed to secure a spot in the OVC championship was another point and they got just that. Now all they must do is look towards getting a better seeding for when tournament play finally kicks off.
Even though the weather made the game a little difficult to watch, some dedicated fans were till there to support their Lady Governors.
“I love watching soccer, and to get to see two D1 teams go head to head in a competitive match is always fun. Besides, a little rain never hurt anybody,” Freshman, Kelly Rodriguez said.
The Governors have their first playoff game against Belmont on Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. in Martin, Tennessee.
