APSU is expected to name Matt Figger, the South Carolina Gamecocks’ associate head coach, as their 12th men’s basketball head coach in history, according to The Leaf Chronicle. The Gamecocks are currently sitting in the NCAA Final Four.
Figger is no stranger to the Ohio Valley Conference. After playing baseball at Pikeville college, he finished his degree at Eastern Kentucky University, according to his South Carolina bio.
Figger coordinates team practices and individual workouts for the Gamecocks. Last season, the Gamecocks matched a school record with a 25-9 overall record, while also finishing 11-7 in the Southeastern Conference.
Before South Carolina, Figger served as Kansas State’s assistant for five years and was eventually promoted to recruiting coordinator. He also served as director of operations at Arkansas and an assistant at South Alabama.
At Kansas State, Figger helped the Wildcats earn their first NCAA tournament win since 1988. He also later helped the Wildcats set a school record of 29 wins and their first Elite Eight appearance in over 20 years.
Figger also spent 10 years in the junior college athletics.
During his junior college coaching days, his teams won 20 or more games eight times, earned six region titles, four district titles and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament four times.
