After this weekend’s, red and white game we do know of one thing. Head Coach Will Healy received his first win in what could be the first of many for the first time head coach.
In what was a exciting day for not only APSU, but for the community as well. A 35-0 Red team victory helped start the festivities off followed by the unveiling of the new Fortera Stadium with a concert by country artist, Maggie Rose and fireworks.
It what looks like an improved offensive game for the Govs, they were able to amass over 400 total yards. Wide receiver Jared Beard was creating havoc for the white team as he was able to weave his way to three touchdowns on five catches for 108 yards. Quarterback Timarious Mitchell threw two of the three to Beard going 6-13 for 131 yards with 42 yards on the ground.
Mickey Macius, another quarterback whose trying to prove what is takes to be the starting quarterback played for both teams. Macius went 15-24 for 122 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
The offensive game was working in all ways but linebacker Jeremiah Mitchell made sure the offense wasn’t the only thing to talk about as he took a Macius interception to the house for a 92 yard, pick six.
Healy is in no hurry of naming a starting quarterback for the first game against Troy on Sept. 3. “Mickey’s more of a dropback passing guy, I think Timarious can do a little more of the spread offense stuff,” Healy said. “They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but we’re going to let it go into the summer.”
The other touchdown for the red team was a two yard out rush by newcomer Carlos Walden. Walden’s touchdown sealed the deal for the longest drive for the red team and the day, a seven play 60 yard drive.
Other notes to make on defense besides Mitchell’s touchdown was senior lineback Antonio Turner recording nine tackles, junior defensive back Jamel Jackson accumulated for nine tackles as well as a sack. BJ Wilson also received a tackle and an interception.
Redshirt sophomore linebacker Gunnar Scholato had five tackles throughout the game, but the biggest thing for Scholato came after the game. Healy and the coaching staff announced that he will be receiving a full scholarship due to his hard efforts during the spring.
If you missed the Spring game, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see the Govs and new head coach Healy this year. The first home game of the year will be against Ohio Valley Conference opponent Tennessee Tech on Sept. 10 at 6 PM as it will be AP Family Day.
