APSU’s basketball department was in search of a new assistant as former coach Corey Gipson left the team for a coaching position with Missouri State University.
Gipson had a coaching and playing career at APSU. Gipson took his coaching skills to the Missouri Valley Conference. Gipson was an assistant for the team the past three years.
Gipson was a two-year starter for the Governors averaging 7.7 points, 2.1 assists and 2.3 assists per game throughout his career at APSU. APSU basketball made two consecutive runs into the Ohio Valley Conference Championship while Gipson was starting in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 while also earning top defensive team in the conference.
Gipson led the Governors to a perfect 16-0 OVC record during his senior year, but fell short of winning the OVC crown. The Governors lost the bid to the NCAA tournament but were selected to the National Invitation Tournament that year. The team advanced to the second round of the NIT after beating Belmont, but lost to George Mason in the second round.
After his basketball days, Gipson completed his bachelor’s and master’s degree. Just before transferring back to APSU, Gipson received an associate’s degree from Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Gipson came back to APSU, leaving Furman for a brief stint after coaching at UNC Greensboro for three years. Virginia State University was the home for Gipson for four years before going to UNC Greensboro. He was on staff for the Trojans as recruiter under long time assistant coach for the Governors, Tony Collins. Collins had recruited Gipson out of junior college at APSU.
Head Coach Dave Loos is once again in search of an assistant for his basketball team. Bubba Wells, long time player and coach departed Austin Peay for OVC rival Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Jay Bowen has been announced to replace Wells as assistant coach.
