KNOXVILLE – History was made at Thompson Boiling Arena Thursday night for APSU Volleyball.
The Lady Govs defeated Tennessee in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17, and 25-23, the first time in school history APSU has conquered the Lady Vols in volleyball.
Senior Jada Stotts led the way, tallying 17 of APSU’s 46 kills. Meanwhile, freshman Ashley Slay provided a spark with 12 kills and five blocks in the match. As a team, the Lady Govs made just eight errors, and overcame the crowd of just over 600 people at the home opener to make quick work of their opponent.
Last season, the Lady Vols swept APSU, 3-0. Tennessee (5-6) came into Thursday’s match winning two out of their last three, while APSU (4-9) was beaten by Chattanooga in the home opener, 3-1, on Tuesday.
APSU-UT was the first match in the DISH Lady Vol Classic which continues into the weekend. The Lady Govs will be back in action Friday against both Montana State and Mercer, then play Memphis on Saturday before returning home.
The last time Tennessee was defeated by APSU in a major sport was 2012, as baseball knocked off the Vols in Knoxville. Prior to that, in 2011, men’s basketball upset them on their home floor.
