The next generation of gaming has arrived with Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.
With the release of the PlayStation 5, launch title games released along with the console include the remake of the PlayStation 3 game Demon Souls, Astro’s Playroom and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the sequel to the 2018 game Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4 by Insomniac Games.
Players take the role of the titular protagonist Miles Morales who, like Peter Parker, has obtained spider powers after being bit by a radioactive spider from the first game, with Peter acting as Miles’ mentor in teaching him how to use his powers.
Taking place during the holidays about a year after the events of the first game, almost all escaped convicts from Ryker’s Island have been transported back to the prison after the defeat of the Sinister Six led by Doctor Otto Octavious, also known as Doctor Octopus, who created a pandemic with a virus created by Oscorp known as “Devil’s Breath.”
After the duo defeated Rhino, a member of the Six who managed to escape transport to Ryker’s, Peter leaves New York for some time, leaving Miles responsible for being the city’s protector.
Still not yet adapted to his newfound powers and responsibilities, Miles’ double life tends to take a toll on him as he tries to find balance.
Miles’ mother, Rio Morales, is running for Mayor, competing with Simon Krieger, head of the Roxxon Energy Corporation.
During a campaign rally, a terrorist group with a heavy use of technology known as The Underground disrupts the rally with intent on causing harm to Roxxon.
With the protection of the city under his responsibility, Miles goes through the many challenges of being Spider-Man as he puts a stop to the new dangers being brought to New York.
The gameplay in this new game is very similar to that of the first game, so players will quickly get the hang of the gameplay if they have played the previous title.
Combat in the game is slightly slower compared to its predecessor, which properly emulates Miles lack of experience with his powers despite having them for a year.
In addition to having a similar yet smaller range of abilities from the first game, a new ability unique to Miles in the game, known as “venom,” are bio-electric attacks which have unique properties which can stun enemies, provide a weakness for certain enemies and can cause more damage.
These abilities can be upgrades with skill points and tech which can be found in the city.
Just like its predecessor, the new game also has alternative costumes, some unique to the game while others are based off of different media such as comics, television series and movies, which can be unlocked by either progressing the story, doing side missions or completing challenges.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a great spin-off sequel to the 2018 game showcasing a unique story that puts focus on the titular character and a proper launch title for the PlayStation 5.
For those who have not upgraded to the new console yet, the game is also available for the PlayStation 4 as well.
Comic book fans and “true believers” are sure to enjoy the continuation Insomniac’s original story of one of Marvel’s popular characters created by the late Stan Lee and the late Steve Ditko.
