APSU and the surrounding area has been brought to its knees the week of Feb. 16 due to Winter Storm Octavia that brought a mix of snow, ice and sleet.
The snow drifts reach heights of four to seven inches and hinder most activity within Montgomery County.
Many news outlets took significant notice of Octavia, with Nashville’s WKRN issuing an Ice Storm Warning for Montgomery County until 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17. This ice storm warning brought about the decision for APSU to close their campuses.
Initially, all APSU campuses, including the Fort Campbell and Springfield campuses, weren’t to open until 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, but after the snow began falling around midnight, the decision to close campuses for Monday, Feb. 16, and Tuesday, Feb. 17, took effect.
According to the WKRN website, the snow isn’t expected to dissipate until later in the week, with temperatures potentially dropping as low as zero degrees Wednesday, Feb. 18, and staying below freezing until Saturday Feb. 21.
This year’s snow comes around two weeks earlier than the 2014 “Snowpocalypse,” which came during the week of March 3 and caused the cancellation of four days of APSU classes, during which many midterm examinations and ACT testing for high school students were scheduled.
