NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — An audit of the Veterans Affairs regional office in Nashville found that staff did not always accurately process medical disability and traumatic brain injury claims filed by veterans and said more outreach was necessary to reach homeless veterans outside of Nashville.
The audit results were released by the VA’s Office of Inspector General on Thursday stemming from an inspection last September.
The auditors sampled 59 claims that involved granting veterans temporary 100 percent disability and for claims related to traumatic brain injury.
Of the sample they reviewed, auditors found about 41 percent were incorrectly processed. This included delays in scheduling medical examinations or incorrectly evaluating TBI-related disabilities. The audit also said the regional office needed to more accurately track claims from homeless veterans.
