Taking selfies at voting booths is illegal in Tennessee, a fact unknown by some, including Justin Timberlake.
Timberlake took a selfie at a voting booth in Tennessee, his home state, after he flew in from California. He posted the picture on Instagram and immediately felt the repercussions as people asked if he was breaking the law.
Timberlake has since deleted the photo from his Instagram. The photo is not under investigation, according to Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich.
CNN quoted Weirich as saying, “No one in our office is currently investigating this matter nor will we be using our limited resources to do so.”
The law in Tennessee was passed earlier in 2016 and it bans voters from taking photos or videos inside a polling location.
In other areas, such as New Hampshire and Indiana, judges have struck down bans on selfies, saying that the bans violate free speech.
According to Communications Director Adam Ghassemi, Tre Hargett, Tennessee secretary of state, has told voters to use their phones inside polling locations only for helping them vote and not for taking photos or videos.
Tennessee is one of the only states that allows early voting, though it does not permit online voting and voters are required to provide government-issued IDs at polls.
