Redshirt sophomore Morgan Jackson scored her first ever goal in a Lady Govs’ jersey as APSU outlasted Belmont in a 2-0 win on Friday, Oct. 21. Senior Gina Fabbro added her 28th career goal late to assure the victory, which secures APSU (9-6-2, 4-2-2 OVC) a spot in the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
This will be the Lady Govs’ first appearance in the OVC tournament since 2013, a season that saw a semifinal exit.
“As much as our goal was to make postseason, we have bigger goals than that for this team,” Head Coach Kelley Guth said. “As a unit, we’re not just satisfied making the tournament. We want to continue improving our performance and finish in the top of the league.”
Jackson recorder her first goal for APSU in the 50th minute. She entered the game with only two shots prior in her career. Junior Kirstin Robertson whipped in a cross that Jackson settled and slid into the net to open up scoring.
In the 86th minute Fabbro reassured the win as the senior netted home a ball from Robertson. The ball, shot from a difficult angle, had no problem finding the back of the net despite the distance from goal.
With that goal, Fabbro is 2 points away from tying Ashley Beck in second on the all-time goal scoring list.
With the two assists Robertson reached 25 points, (points= goal x 2+ assists) making her one of three players to ever do so. The others are Beck and Tatiana Ariza.
Junior keeper Lindsey Todd was busy early on as Belmont (5-7-4, 3-1 OVC) fired away with five shots on goal in the first five minutes. Todd would finish the evening with five saves while improving her record to 7-2-2 with a goal percentage of 0.87.
The Lady Govs held Belmont to three shots in the second half.
APSU will host Jacksonville State on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
