Similar to my last post about 80’s and 90’s teen romance movies, this week I’m going to talk about mischievous teen movies from 1999 because Netflix is full of them. If you were like me, your mom didn’t let you watch these movies the first time around, probably not even until senior year, due to heavy sexual content and overall debauchery.
Probably out of the most nostalgic comedies of 1999 is American Pie, taking the award for most raunchy. Starring Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Sean William Scott, Alyson Hannigan and Tara Reid, American Pie follows the lives of 4 best friends in high school who are obsessed with losing their virginity before graduation. The term “boys will boys” doesn’t even cover half of the shenanigans that they get into. If you haven’t seen it, or even if you have, watch it again – I promise many laughs. Also, if you like the first movie, American Wedding is also on Netflix and is just as funny.
If you’re into teen dramas of 1999, two of my favorite movies are on Netflix:
Cruel Intentions, staring Ryan Phillippee, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, dives into the crazy world of step-siblings Sebastian and Kathryn, two extremely rich teenagers who make a bet that Sebastian can’t take Annette’s virginity. This movie is really manipulative and a series of unfortunate events spins out of control after everything take a bad turn. Make sure to watch this movie because it won’t disappoint.
American Beauty isn’t as manipulative as Cruel Intentions, but it definitely has its own series of unfortunate events. Staring Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley and Mena Suvari, American Beauty depicts the “perfect life” of the average American family. However, like any average family, each member has its secrets. Packed full of drama, the movie also houses some of the most iconic scenes and quotes from pop culture. There are so many separate plots within this movie that it is promised to be full of energy.
And, as always, if you’re in the mood for horror (cause I always am) check out The Haunting, starring Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The movie follows the horror that unleashes after a group of people decides to participate in a sleep study, but after they arrive in an old mansion weird things start to happen.
Be sure to check out all of these films on Netflix, and make you sure you read next week’s blog, because I’m going to talk and give my opinion on everything Oscars.
