APSU kicked off homecoming week with their annual Fight Song Competition with wins from APSU’s chapters of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and Chi Omega sorority on Monday, Oct. 19 at the Foy Fitness Center.
The competition was fierce as seven of APSU’s student organizations sang and dance it out on stage for first place, prize money and bragging rights for the year.
Among those organizations were, Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Delta Pi, a recently chartered Pi Kappa Alpha, Chi Omega, Alpha Sigma Alpha and Alpha Tau Omega.
Students were required to sing APSU’s fight song and then add their own individuality to it. Some covered songs and had choreographed dances and some just participated with what seemed like little preparation. Judges awarded points to the organizations for items during the performance like clarity, creativity and overall school spirit.
One performance was very different from the others. Senior Public Relations Major and member of Fiji Zac Moore, went on stage first and by himself to support his organization and show his school spirit.
“It was very nerve racking,” Moore said. “Then when I heard the music I just played it off as much as I could to make the crowd feel the energy I wanted them to feel.”
Next to the stage was Alpha Omicron Pi. The sorority did a rock-and-roll theme, but did not place.
“Being involved on campus during homecoming week is one of the most important things,” said Abbey Kepley, sophomore public relations major and member of AOPi. “I love being involved and if you’re not, you aren’t going to experience the true college experience most students want in school.”
The next group was SigEp fraternity, a four man effort with two masked men and two men in their Red Tie Affair.
Next was the winners, Alpha Delta Pi. They wore white button downs with long red ties. ADPi incorporated poster board artwork of the new Governor, remixes of songs and choreographed dance moves.
After ADPi, the newly chartered fraternity Pike took the stage for second place. They sang a cover of pitch perfect songs all in white button downs and red tied, showing off their Red Tie Affair.
Next up was Chi Omega. They stuck to Justin Timberlake and added Sweet Caroline at the end, but remixed it with “Sweet Austin Peay”. Chi Omega finished third in the competition.
The last two organizations were ASA and ATO. ASA had a choreographed performance with songs and dance, taking out the words and replacing with Fight Song lyrics. ATO sang the fight song acapella with an addition of a fake boxing match afterwards.
The energy was high even when the event was over and people made their way to the Dunn Bowl for the announcement of the Fight Song winners and 2015 Homecoming court nominees.
ADPi danced their way into first winning $750, Pike came in second earning $250 with a Pitch Perfect cover, and Chi O followed in third with a mix of Justin Timberlake songs.
