The Kimbrough Building suffered major flood damage to floors and ceilings building-wide Thursday morning.
The only elevator in the building is filled to the top with water and cannot be opened. Ceilings on both floors have major damage including some rooms with tiles that have fallen completely through. Throughout the building, standing water covers the floors.
According to Physical Plant staff, the flooding was caused by a cooling coil on an air handler splitting and bursting the water pipe. From stairwell to stairwell on both floors of the building, there is damage.
APSU called in a state agency, Belfor, to help with the cleanup and repairs alongside Physical Plant staff.
No technology has been damaged yet, according to Belfor workers. The floors took the brunt of the damage throughout the building with some damage on the ceilings.
Physical Plant staff said they hope to have a better assessment of the damage by the end of the day.
Tom Hutchins, director of the project to clean Kimbrough, said the repairs to the business portion of Kimbrough will be completed by or before Tuesday, Jan. 20, in time for classes, but there is still no timeline for the graduate studies portion of Kimbrough.
Hutchins said there is not an estimate for how much cleaning and repairing the building will cost.
UPDATE
The office of Graduate Studies and the College of Business offices were forced to relocate to Miller Hall during the clean-up and repairs. According to Interim Dean of Graduate Studies Mike Gotcher, the College of Graduate Studies was functioning in their new location in Miller Hall three days after the flood.
The main office is now Miller 207.
This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly. TAS
