On Wednesday, April 16, APSU held The Student Organization & Leader Awards.
The Student Organization & Leader Awards are an opportunity for individuals and organizations to be recognized for their outstanding work.
“My hope for those recognized,” said vice president for Student Affairs Sheryll Byrd, “would be that they use their awards as motivation to do even more to better themselves or impact others. One of the responsibilities of a leader in my opinion is to use those skills or that position to make a difference for others.”
The awards include Silent Inspiration Award, Outstanding Student Employee, Mr. Governor and Madam Governor Awards, President’s Cup, Valor Award, and many more.
Mike Dunn was recognized as Student Organization Adviser of the Year for his service as an advisor to the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon. Dunn said he believes as a whole APSU is fortunate to have great students.
Graduate student Ben Sterling was recognized as Fraternity Man of the Year. For him, he said it is an honor to even be considered, and he is humble.
“I have to thank SigEp for giving me the opportunity to impact the Greek community. I’m proud to be from such a diverse and giving community that truly molds people into model citizens. Being Greek at APSU is something that’s life changing for everyone that participates, and I hope more people give it shot. My time in a fraternity at Austin Peay was truly the most defining segment of my life thus far,” Sterling said.
Corporate communications major William Morton is extremely happy to have won the Andrew L. Drew Simmons Intramural Leader of the Year Award. He said his parents have always taught him to give 100 percent in everything, while keeping a level head.
“I always try to stay positive, and encourage my friends and teammates even when faced with large obstacles. It is a huge honor, and very rewarding to be notice for something that usually gets looked over.”
The last award of the evening was the Vice President’s Excellence in Leadership Award. This year’s recipient was senior biology major Danielle Joslin.
“I feel very honored to have received it. I hope I serve as an inspiration to others to want to develop themselves throughout their college experience, just as I have done,” Joslin said.
The ceremony came to a close when President Tim Hall gave closing remarks.
“The Student Leadership Award ceremony is one of the highlights of the APSU year. They remind us rich and deep and wide the life of the university is, and how many people are working hard every day to make APSU a great place,” Hall said.
