Following ties in DeLand last Sunday and another tie at home against Kennesaw on Thursday, the Governors remained home for their final regular season matchup and a 1-1 draw against Queens University of Charlotte for their Alumni game.
Austin Peay started the match particularly strong with a goal in the eighth minute to define the first half.
The goal, scored by junior midfielder Alec Baumguardt, came directly following a corner kick by senior midfielder Tori Case. Case kicked the ball into the goalie box towards the end of the seventh minute, bringing the ball to sophomore forward Ellie Dreas.
Dreas then got the ball to Baumguardt for her first goal of the 2023 season. This is also Dreas’ first assist of the season.
The Govs continued to dominate the field, leading in shots, shots on goal and assists for the game. APSU had a total of 13 shots and 5 shots on goal, while Queens had 11 shots and 4 on goal. Dreas had the only assist of the game.
APSU’s shots were the combined efforts of Baumgardt (4 shots, 1 on goal), freshman forward Alana Owens (3 shots, 1 on goal), junior defender Lindsey McMahon (2 shots, 2 on goal), sophomore midfielder Alison LaLance (1 shot, 1 on goal), senior midfielder Hannah Wilson (1 shot), junior midfielder Hannah Zahn (1 shot) and sophomore midfielder Kasidy Schenk (1 shot).
Throughout the matchup, the Governors played an aggressive defense and offense, with junior goalie Katie Bahn keeping Queens from scoring throughout the game while the offense earned their sole point to lead coming into the second half.
Queens’ point came from an accidental APSU own goal in the 83rd minute.
While their regular season is now over, the Governors will continue against regular season champions Lipscomb University, on Saturday, October 21 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tennessee. The game will begin at 6 pm.
Regardless of the outcome of that game, APSU will continue into the 2023 ASUN Conference Championship.
